PharmD or not to PharmD in the Philippines

Many questions have been raised if a B.S Pharmacy Graduate should take the Doctor of Pharmacy Program..

Here’s one of the reason why you should take the Doctor of Pharmacy Program

Doctor of Pharmacy program now on its 4th year of offering at CEU Makati. Two batches have graduated already. Graduates of Pharm D. Are now working at Makati Medical Center, St Lukes Hospital, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and Singapore. Hospital clerkships are done at Makati Medical Center while the drugstore clerkships are done at Manson Drugstore Inc.

A ladderized 6 yr course leading to Doctor of Pharmacy and 4 yr course leading to Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy is offered effective first semester SY 2008-2009. A student can opt to finish only BS Pharmacy or go directly and finished the Doctor of Pharmacy.

This is a good news because of you finished Doctor of Pharmacy in six straight years, you can now take the FPGEE. Yes you heard it right, NABP allows foreign pharmacy graduates to take FPGEE as long as the you graduated before 2003 and 5 years after 2003. So in summary, you can have your degree in 6 straight years in doctor of pharmacy and take the FPGEE.

You know, I’m wondering now whether the Doctor of Pharmacy Program was really designed to improve the practice of pharmacy HERE in the Philippines so that sick Filipinos (which include our families and friends) will have a taste of pharmaceutical care or just to attract would-be takers so they’ll have greater chance of going abroad…

    nice shot Mr Angelo…

More information/details should be dessiminated by the schools, DECS and Pharmacutical Association/s to inform pharmacists about this new degree. If this is really for the upliftment of the profession, am sure many will be interested.

  • PharmD program will really help our profession HERE, if our intention is to help the profession and not only thinking of taking the degree because of eligibility for FPGEE…hey I know your good intention and seeking greener pasteur,,but let us help first the profession…the demand is big but where not putting any good credentialing to our profession,if the association that we are under cannot surface the needs to promote the profession…we can stand on ourselves and dignify our profession and I believe being a pharmD is one key to that dreams. Our Association should tap our medical and allied groups and promote the profession. Yes its different from master….coz master is a traditional and didactic approach. What we really need now is the experiencial approach coz we learned from doing it and interacting to that learnings. PharmD leads to specialization…(critical care, ambulatory, internal medicine etc). I encourage all RPh not to be satisfied of passing the board exam, you need to enhance your ASK (attitudes, skills and knowledge) but studying more… I hope my advocacy for the profession will stand out for the betterment of our profession.
